We also condemn the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023, which killed hundreds
of Israeli civilians, including women, children, and the elderly. Acts of
violence against civilian populations are unacceptable, regardless of their
origin, and only deepen the suffering of peoples. We express our solidarity
with all victims and their families — both Palestinian and Israeli.
Since then, the response of the Israeli government has been
disproportionate and marked by a policy of collective punishment, with
systematic bombings of schools, hospitals, refugee camps, and essential
infrastructure. More than 60,000 Palestinians have
already died, most of them defenceless civilians. The total siege on Gaza —
depriving millions of people of food, water, medicine, and electricity — is, in
the eyes of the international community, a crime that may constitute genocide,
as recognized by the International Court of Justice.
The CSS of the CGTP-IN
considers the passivity or complicity of several governments — including the AD
(PSD/CDS) Government in Portugal — and international institutions, such as the
EU, to be unacceptable. A lasting peace will only be possible with justice,
respect for International Law, and the recognition of the Palestinian people's
right to their own state.
The Socialist Trade Union Current of the CGTP-IN reaffirms the values of
peace, justice, and solidarity among peoples and demands:
- An
immediate and unconditional ceasefire;
- The
lifting of the blockade on Gaza and urgent entry of humanitarian aid;
- The release of Israeli hostages
held by Hamas, as well as the release of Palestinian political prisoners
held by Israeli authorities;
- Compliance with UN resolutions,
namely the recognition of the State of Palestine in accordance with
Resolution 242 of 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital;
- An end to the occupation and
colonization of Palestinian territories and respect for human rights and
International Humanitarian Law.
We call on political
parties, social organizations, and religious institutions — which have
historically defended human dignity and peace — to show solidarity with the
victims of this conflict, condemn the violence, and demand an immediate
ceasefire that saves lives and promotes justice.
We also call on workers
and their organizations, in Portugal and around the world, to intensify the
denunciation of this tragedy, combat all forms of racism, antisemitism, and
Islamophobia, and affirm solidarity with all those who struggle for a future of
peace, dignity, and justice in the Middle East.
